College

Cecil (Community) College’s Barnes and Nobles bookstore and the Alpha Alpha Theta (AAT) Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society co-hosted a Magical Release Party for the new and final Harry Potter book The Deathly Hallows on Friday, July 20th from 6 PM until 1 AM in the Technology Building at the North East Campus. Guests were sorted into their houses as they came down the steps through the platform 9 ¾ barrier which was made by the Kids in Kollege Harry Potter class taught by Lauren Anguish. After sorting, they were invited to join in activities that included: coloring pictures of the Hogwarts characters, making Potter glasses using pipe cleaners, having their picture taken with a cutout of Harry from the new book, taking a herbology lesson where they made terrariums using recycled bottles and plant clippings, participate in a trivia challenge held by the potions master, and a Potter character look-a-like contest. All four Harry Potter movies were shown in two locations during the event and there was even an area with “Food for Muggles”.

The idea for co-hosting the part came about when the bookstores manager, Kathy Burris approached AAT Chapter President, Andy Davis and asked him if the chapter would be interested in the event. Mr. Davis took the idea to the chapter officers who all voted in favor to help. The first event of its kind for the campus bookstore, the Magical Release Party was a success, selling 50 books between midnight and 1:15 AM. Miss Burris was very pleased with the success of the event that brought out approximately 100 guests and Cecil faculty and staff. AAT members Andy Davis; Tonya Dean-Catlett, Vice-President of Service; Teresa Malin, Recording Officer; Laura Styles, Prospective Officer; Kenneth Chege, Vice President of Leadership; Amanda Shertz, former Vice-President of Scholarship, and Chris Jackson were joined by AAT alumni Sarah Kraus, former Chapter President; and Arial Woodworth, former Vice-President of Service, as well as by Chapter Advisors Jane Sharrow and Gail Wyant.

Both the bookstore and AAT have been receiving very positive feedback regarding the event. Those who attended the event had an enjoyable evening and were pleased to get their copy of the much anticipated 7th year book during a midnight release. Several customers were even reading the book in groups while sitting in the hall outside of the bookstore while others were still lined up to get their copy.

The bookstore and AAT would like to thank everyone who attended the party and helped to make it the success event that it was.

AAT Donates Tree in Memory of Lady Bird Johnson

For Release: 7/21/2007

Prepared by: Tonya J. During this event, Andy and Tonya heard from speakers on various topics of the honor study topic, "Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power", and networked with Phi Theta Kappans from around the world. They shared ideas and got ideas, from others attending, on scholarship projects for the honor study topic, service projects, and learned valuable leadership skills. Andy and Tonya were also able to spend a day in Chicago with their fellow Kappans. During their Chicago Day, Andy met up with a fellow participant of the 2006 International Honors Institute in Newark, DE that he also attended. Even though I can not win the Distinguished President Award 2 years in a row, its the fellowship and the activities that I am looking forward to."

AAT Hosts King Tut Trip

February 25th, AAT hosted a trip to the Franklyn Institute to see the "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of Pharaohs" exhibit. VP of Scholarship, Amanda Shertz, organized the trip for the chapter. Chapter President, Andy Davis, Chapter Advisor, Jane Sharrow, AAT members, Ed Floor and Zack Rothwell, Honorary Member, Steve Snyder, 1 Cecil Student, and 3 Cecil County residents, joined Amanda and her husband and son for this trip.

All 12 who attended the exhibit had a great time, and were amazed by the exhibit. After seeing the exhibit, the attendees discussed their favorite pieces in the exhibit and discussed Tutankhamun's roll in Egyptian history through his rule, restructuring of the old religion that the former pharaoh changed, and his mysterious death before his 20th birthday.

"The exhibit was incredible." says Chapter President, Andy Davis, "The artifacts that were on display really gave insight to Egyptian culture three thousand years ago. What you see in the movies is nothing compared to what you see and learn in this exhibit. I highly recommend that you pend the extra six dollars and get the audio tour. We did, and it enhanced our experience with this exhibit. It was a perfect example of the "Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power" 2006 - 2008 Phi Theta Kappa Honor Study Topic. It had Gold, a Religious aspect, and the Glory that is Tut."

Andy remembers when the Tut exhibit toured beck in the 70's, "I wanted to see the exhibit when it came to New York when I was a kid, but my family could not afford the trip. I am glad that I had the chance to see it this time around. It was well worth the wait, and was an educational experience that I will not soon forget. If you are interested in Ancient Egypt, I highly recommend this exhibit."

Chapter President Grows Hair for Locks Of Love

Susan White (Chapter President, Alpha Sigma Pi, Chesapeake College), Andy Davis (Chapter President, Alpha Alpha Theta, Cecil Community College), Mike Rippetoe (Maryland State President, Alpha Nu Omicron Chapter, Wor-Wic College)

Alpha Alpha Theta Chapter President, Andy Davis (center), at Cecil Community College in North East, Maryland, is committed to helping cancer patients. This year we had a tough choice to make for Chapter Officer and Chapter Member, so we had to make our discision carefully. Finally it was decided.

The Distinguished Chapter Officer Nomination was given to Amanda Sherts, VP of Scholarship. Amanda has been an extreemly active officer for the chapter durring the Fall Semester, while also being a nursing student, a wife, and a mother. This is a real balancing act for any student. For her hard work with the AAT Unity in the Community booth, the Basket Bingo fundraiser, and planning our upcoming trip to the King Tut Exhibit in Philadelphia, PA among other activities with AAT during the 2006 calander year.

The Distinguished Chapter Member Nomination was given to Edward Floor. Ed is also a nursing student, he works with Narcodics Annonimous in his spare time, and was on the College Management Team during the Fall Semester. Along with the previous activities, Ed helped with the new smoking policy at Cecil, aided the campus bookstore to improve the adoption rate of the text books for the Spring Semester classes, and worked with other members during the Basket Bingo. For a member who just joined AAT in the Fall, Ed has been pretty generoius with giving his time to the chapter.

Miss Jane Sharrow, AAT co-advisor, also had Ed write a nomination for Chapter President Andy Davis for Distinguished Chapter President. A Computer Programming/General Studies/Web Development Student at Cecil, Andy joined AAT over the Summer Semester of 2006, Was elected President, and has represented AAT at Regional and International Honors Institutes, the Regional Picnic and Maryland Leadership Conference, has hosted two Regional Chapter Presidents Luncheons, Adopted the Chesapeak College chapter (Alpha Sigma Pi) as AAT's Sister Chapter and aided them to go from a one-star chapter to a five-star chapter between October 2006 and December 2006, doubled as AAT's Webmaster, and been an active Student Leader at Cecil. Andy has been involver in every activity that AAT has done since June 2006. He has also worked with other Student Leaders on projects such as Cecil's All College Day, attended Cecil's Leadership Retreat, helped the bookstore with Ed on the book adoptions, and will be attending the Student Advocacy Day in Annapolis, MD on February 14, 2007. All this and he still maintained a 4.0 grade point average with 11 credits in the Fall Semester.

Other AAT award nominations include, the Five-Star Chapter Award, the Service Hallmark Award, the Scholarship Hallmark Award, the Leadership Hallmark Award, and the Website Award. Award winners will be announced at the Regional Convention in Valley Forge, PA March 1st - 3rd, and at International Convention in Nashville, TN April 11th - 15th.

Students Present Spring 2006 All College Day

Cecil Community College's Spring All College Day, "Your Students - Our Success" was on January 17th with the main presentation done by some of Cecil's student leaders. We re the first two chapters in Maryland to sign up for this program to assist less active chapters to improve their activity and boost their five star status. As a past five star chapter, we are working with ASP (a former one star chapter) to get them to at least a three star status by the end of December. This lets us fellowship with another chapter while we work on our regional chapter champion goals.

We have already become friends with ASP since last years International Conference in Seatle, Washington. To add to the promoting recycling, AAT also found a the PlanetPals.com ,a web site for parents and teachers to use to teach kids about recycling (link below), and gave each child the site address on a free coloring page from the site.
The children had a great time with this activity and some came back to make more for friends and family.
